Unfortunately this exhibition is already over as I write this review. But for those interested in the man’s work, his show is due to open at the Guggenheim in Berlin on the 30th of November. This was like a sneak preview I suppose, no frills or fuss in the exhibition set up. Just models on trestles and table tops. No special lighting. Barely a storage room for these amazing investigations of space, materiality, interiority, exteriority, infinity. These are vast subjects, but the rigor with which the artist investigates them is very impressive. Remember the installation at the Tate Modern, then look at the image above. Relentlessly, Anish Kapoor seems to come up with different versions of his notions of interior/exterior, using different materials and configurations. He’s also explored other subjects, as illustrated by the second picture, which reminded me of Mark West’s work (see also AD: Protoarchitecture ) where casts are used to explore the nature - and weight- of a material. This exhibit however is nothing like the real thing. These are models, representation of that intended to be experienced. It thus requires a considerable amount of imagination and projection to understand it fully. More like pushing the door of an architectural office. You may see the ideas but you won’t see the real thing.

For those who can’t make it to Berlin - and I’m one of them - I recommend the book ‘Past Present Future’ published by the institute of contemporary art in Boston, a very well crafted book. fabric bound.
