I haven’t been writing much lately with the teaching at ESA taking up a good part of my time, so I decided to show here some of the students’ projects. The two week Workshop was lead by Valérie Portefaix and Laurent Gutierrez of MAP Office, Hong Kong based multidisciplinary practice, who visited the school twice. Additional tutorials took place on Skype, and it worked ! Their proposed subject ‘Car/Casse’ was most inspiring. In a time when our relationship with the Car is ambivalent to say the least, students have responded with wit and took a critical slant on the subject. The once symbol of freedom and wealth has now become synonymous with pollution and over-consumption, filling up the streets of Paris. The emphasis put on 1:1 scale exploration and an open frame on the choice of medium resulted in a variety of videos, models and events.  Rebecca Levy and Camille Isaac-Dognin decided to rent a parking space for 2 hours everyday for over a week (2 euros for 12 sqm in the city centre of Paris), which they could dispose of as they pleased. They turned this public space dedicated to the car into a private one, setting up a diner table, playing table tennis or viewing a movie, using Facebook to invite friends to their activities, which were soon oversubscribed. Alexandre Diner and Benoist Buttin undertook a large scale manufacture of small paper cars, using laser cutting technology as well as the help of many many voluntary hands, discovering on the way some customisation trends and ending on the collapse of the system, which we are experiencing today.
