Berger & Berger, Le 104

Le 104, an Arts institution funded and founded by the Ville de Paris has just opened. I would generally be quite wary of this type of place, ruled by the Institutions. But this one is only a ten minute ride away from my place, so I went. The place is huge. For this visit I was going to check out on Berger&Berger open studio day. One brother is architect, the other a visual artist, together they are in residence at le 104, and working on a series of pavilions. I walk across the long glazed hall, hosting a french contemporary art fair in a few days, to finally reach a dark room where an actor is reading a text supposed to be the narrative counterpoint of Berger&Berger’s unfinished pavilion outside. Unexpected to say the least, but I enjoy narratives in architectural projects. Though the text doesn’t really strike me as a suitable piece, too lyrical and too long, I will come back. I will come and see the development of the project, and I will listen to Olivia Rosenthal’s ‘Viande Froide’, whose work may remind me of Janet Cardiff’s Whitechapel walk.

Le 104, établissement artistique de la Ville de Paris vient d’ouvrir ses portes. En règle générale, je me serais plutôt méfiée d’un tel intitulé, un peu trop institutionnel. Mais je m’y suis risquée, ce n’est qu’à dix minutes à vélo. L’espace est vaste, et pour cette visite j’avais repéré la journée ‘porte ouverte’ de Berger&Berger, deux frères, l’un architecte, l’autre plasticien, actuellement en résidence au 104 et travaillant sur une série de pavillons. Je traverse de part en part le grand espace qui doit accueillir une foire d’art contemporain en fin de semaine, pour me retrouver au milieu de la répétition de la lecture du texte qui accompagne le pavillon encore inachevé de Berger et Berger. Pour le moins surprenant, mais je suis adepte des architectures dites ‘narratives’. Même si le texte ne me plaît guère, trop lyrique et tout en longueurs, je reviendrai, pour voir la progression du projet. C’est sûr, je reviendrai, et je prendrai le temps d’écouter ‘Viande Froide’, d’Olivia Rosenthal, dont l’approche me rappelle celle de Janet Cardiff à Whitechapel.
